What’s better than a spot of afternoon tea? Having the choice of hot starters to accompany your sandwiches and scones. What’s even better? Being able to wash it all down with a complimentary bottle of Prosecco! To celebrate turning another year older, I rounded up a few of my fave ladies to join me in this great British tradition at Scoff & Banter Tea Rooms – offering afternoon tea with a twist!
Just off Oxford Street, on the first floor of the Radisson Hotel, you’ll find this nicely kitted out tearoom, serving more than standard finger sized sandwiches. For £34pp , you have the freedom to personalise your afternoon tea stand – a la carte style! Choose 2 items from each section of the menu (2 hot dishes, 2 types of scones, 2 types of sandwiches and 2 types of desserts) from a great selection that’s guaranteed to satisfy even the pickiest of eaters.
There’s an extensive range of loose leaf teas available…unlimited no doubt!I opt for the Oysters Rockefeller to start – with a lovely herb and buttery crumb, stimulating my tastebuds for what’s to come. The scallops followed closely behind and did not disappoint. Nicely seared with just the right amount of spice and perfectly cooked inside. The crispy cauliflower beignets (fritters) were light, tasty and went well with the scallops, adding a wonderful texture to the dish. Now for the tier, venturing away from the standard cucumber sandwiches, I opt for toasted sourdough with steak and balsamic onions and smoked salmon and crayfish toasted bagel with dill creme fraiche – tripled layered bagel….Ohhh yeah!
The scones were mini sized and served with Devonshire clotted cream and a variety of preserves. Although portions were small in size, I was surprisingly filling up by this point – deceivingly satisfying.
However, there’s always room for dessert.
Being the birthday girl and all, the waiter kindly offered me an extra dessert….winning! Not that I needed it but it seemed way too good to pass up. And besides, there’s still always room for MORE dessert!
Dessert #1: Sticky toffee pudding – standard, served in a mini mug with a scoop of clotted cream, that could easily be mistaken for ice cream….be warned!
Dessert #2: Lemon meringue pieces sat on top of a pastry case with blackberry compote, drizzled with lime syrup – absolutely delightful. A nice balance of sweet and tart with every bite.
Dessert #3: Chocolate whisky cake topped with candied orange and malt shake – a nice, rich and very generous slice…even I was struggling to get through it all at this point!
If already having 3 desserts wasn’t enough, the restaurant staff continued to surprise and delight me with a fourth, together with a candle and a single white rose – what a very sweet gesture! Kudos to our lovely waiter who went to great lengths to make sure the day was extra special.
Couldn’t have picked a better venue to celebrate my birthday. Outstanding service (makes the 12.5% surcharge worth paying) coupled with quality food that really did touch the sides. As for turning a year older, if it means another year full of culinary delights and sipping on bubbles, then I can easily overlook the dreaded ageing process.
Till next time…Outskies!
